In the version of the article initially published, in Fig. 5a, values represented by the transparent boxes were overestimated owing to an incorrect conversion from carbon dioxide to carbon. In Fig. 5b, the numerical labels in the legend were incorrectly inflated owing to errors in the calculation of orders of magnitude. Figure 5 has been corrected and the original, uncorrected figure is available for comparison as Supplementary information accompanying this amendment. In addition, in the second paragraph of the section ‘Potential and implications of agroforestry expansion’, the text “Furthermore, woody carbon density is significantly higher in countries that mention agroforestry in their NDCs (n = 81) than in those that do not (n = 81; Welch’s t-test, P = 1.92 × 10−5), yet potential additional density shows no such difference (P = 0.397; nNDC = 80, nnon-NDC = 77)” should have read: “Furthermore, woody carbon density is significantly higher in countries that mention agroforestry in their NDCs (n = 80) than in those that do not (n = 78; Welch’s t-test, P = 1.98 × 10−5), yet potential additional density shows no such difference (P = 0.412; nNDC = 81, nnon-NDC = 82).” These errors have been corrected in the HTML and PDF versions of the article, and the sample sizes have also been corrected in the Supplementary information.
