Scientists with visible and invisible disabilities take on adversity, helping themselves and others.
Shigehiro Namiki always wanted to study insects. After his PhD research at the University of Tsukuba, he was a postdoctoral fellow, then a staff scientist at Janelia Research Campus. Among his projects, Namiki worked with others on a method to analyze how the few so-called descending neurons in fruit flies control a wide range of movements and behavior. These neurons run from the brain to the ventral nerve cord and branch out to circuits that control the insect’s neck, legs and wings.
